Italy Energy Storage
Italy''s energy mix is increasingly composed of variable renewable energy sources. Electricity storage is needed to integrate renewables into the grid.
The industrial group's report said 209,112 energy storage systems were installed in Italy last year, with total rated power of 2,113 MW and storage capacity of 5,921 MWh. That took the nation to 733,666 systems, at the end of the year, with 5,565 MW total rated power and 12,942 MWh of storage.
Therefore, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are needed in Italy. The Italian market for BESS is growing rapidly and currently amounts to 2.3 GW but it almost exclusively consists of residential scale systems, associated with small scale solar plants, having a capacity of less than 20 kWh.
As Italy's energy mix is increasingly composed of variable renewable energy sources, electricity storage will be needed to integrate power generated by renewables into the national grid and make it available when sun and wind energy are not accessible.
In addition, electricity storage is critical to avoid congestion in the power grid since most of the renewable production originates in Southern Italy but is consumed mostly in the north. Therefore, PNIEC also provides for the installation of new energy storage infrastructure with the aim of reaching 22.5 GW of installed storage capacity by 2030.

According to the medium scenario, the Italian market will rebound strongly in 2027, with new installations reaching 10.2 GWh that year, and further increasing to 16.7 GWh in 2029. By the

Italy significantly expanded its energy storage capacity last year, driven by large-scale projects exceeding 1 MWh. Anie, a division of national business organization Confindustria, reported
In June 2024, Italy has over 650,000 connected storage systems, totaling 4.50 GW in power and 9.62 GWh in capacity. Although the majority of this capacity is linked to photovoltaic

Energy storage systems are a strategic asset to guarantee security and flexibility to the national electricity grid and accelerate Italy''s energy transition. And they are essential to reach Italy''s target of
GW Germany and Great Britain are market leaders by installed capacity today. By 2030, Great Britain and Italy are expected to have the greatest installed capacity of batteries, together
