Ara Tapu, a road that travels the circumference of the island, passes through Avarua. A second, inner road, Ara Metua, said to have been built by an ancient Polynesian chief, passes alongside the ring road near the town and, like Ara Tapu, also reaches most of the island's periphery.
Avarua is a tiny, lived-in island capital more useful than flashy: its Saturday Punanga Nui market, the small Cook Islands National Museum, and the waterfront/harbour are the real highlights rather than big tourist attractions, so expect local flavor, fresh food stalls and a few mellow bars with live music rather than clubbing.
