This paper proposes a comprehensive process for recycling of discarded silicon-based PV panels economically, environmentally, and efficiently.
The recycling potential of generated waste and the fate of materials in end-of-life PV waste as per the present regulations is also estimated. Further, the work analyses solar manufacturers contributing to the waste and provides recommendations for improving solar PV waste management.
Regarding the specific recycling process, there are three main difficulties in recycling discarded PV panels: component separation, purification of Si, and recovery of Cu strips. Firstly, in terms of component separation, the primary step is the elimination of EVA, as it binds the various layers together.
The cost of reagents for the recycling waste PV panels amounts to 290.23 USD. Regarding wastewater, recycling one tonne of waste PV panels generates around 1.0 m 3 wastewater. Presently, the cost for disposal wastewater is 10–25 USD per m 3.
